Why choose a Montessori school?
Are you a parent wondering which school to choose for your child? That's perfectly understandable! Here are a few things to consider to help you decide whether a Montessori school meets your expectations and needs.
In a Montessori classroom, every effort is made to develop the skills that enable children to reach their full potential.
Children become independent and self-disciplined.
Children enjoy three main freedoms:
- freedom to choose activities,
- freedom of movement
- freedom of time.
These three freedoms encourage children to make active choices and take action. Because they are doing activities that they enjoy and that meet their needs, children are naturally more disciplined. But freedom does not mean a total absence of control or limits! Children are encouraged on a daily basis to respect the rules of community life—respect for the work and concentration of others, respect for all people (children and adults) in the classroom, and respect for materials. This is how self-discipline is established in the classroom.
Children grow up in an atmosphere of mutual support and empathy.
Every day, children have short sessions on "grace and courtesy," where they learn the rules of social interaction and collaboration. Through small role-playing games, children learn, for example, to speak quietly in class, to ask for help, or to resolve conflicts. In a positive way, by showing only the desired behavior, children are taught the concepts of respect, mutual aid, and empathy. In addition, since each child chooses the activity that suits their needs and level, any notion of comparison or competition is excluded from the classroom.
Children develop their ability to concentrate
Because concentration is the cornerstone of all learning, every effort is made to stimulate and protect children's concentration at work. Each student is encouraged to complete their activity, regardless of the time required. This is why the daily 2.5-hour uninterrupted work periods are so valuable! They give everyone time to finish their work. Each activity has been designed to engage the child's full attention in order to help them gradually acquire an increasingly longer attention span. Children thus become capable of performing increasingly complex tasks that require a high level of concentration (adding large numbers, multiplication, division, etc.).
Children learn to have confidence in themselves
In Montessori schools, we don't do things for children, but teach them to "do things by themselves." Each child is encouraged to engage in activities that match their abilities. Through gentle progression, children learn to independently perform increasingly complex activities, which contributes to their pride and the development of genuine self-esteem. In addition, children are respected as individuals and are listened to attentively by their teachers as they express their thoughts and desires. This supportive environment allows them to develop confidence in themselves, in their personal abilities, and in their relationships with others.
Children can fully develop their creativity.
Creativity is not solely artistic. It is a quality that demonstrates true intellectual freedom, allowing one to view reality from different angles. In Montessori schools, children are encouraged to demonstrate "mental flexibility" in order to solve everyday problems on their own, whether in practical life, mathematics, or science. Emphasis is also placed on artistic expression, through the discovery of different movements and artists in painting, music, sculpture, and more.
Children learn to live in society
School is an essential place for children to socialize. Children who attend Montessori classes benefit from mixed-age groups, which greatly enriches their social experience—the younger children imitate the older ones, and the older ones help the younger ones. Interactions between children provide opportunities to learn the rules of social life, to work on patience, self-control, politeness, and respect. Mealtimes are also an important opportunity to learn to share, discuss, and listen to others in a friendly atmosphere.
If these values resonate with you, then Montessori is definitely right for your children!
